GIBSON, Ena Marie (nee Jennings)
September 9, 1936 – January 5, 2020

It is with very heavy hearts that we announce that our mother, Ena Marie Gibson passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, January 5, 2020 at Guelph General Hospital. Ena had lived her last few years with dementia but never lost her enjoyment of life and continued to share her smile. Ena was predeceased by her loving husband Jim Gibson (2000). She will be greatly missed by her children Pat, Rick (Dahlia), Carolyn (Steven Cross) and honorary son, nephew Garry (Jackie 2019) Couture. Beloved grandmother of John (Stacey), Jeff (Kacey), Adam, and Tony, David and Wren, Nolan, and great granddaughter Nicole. Sister of the late Edna (Mitch 2002) Kennedy (2015), Ted (Dot) Jennings and Jim (Gloria) Jennings.

Ena was born on September 9, 1936 in Toronto and moved to Acton with her parents Ed and Edith Jennings in February of 1937. She was a proud Actonian through and through and despite moving to Guelph in October 2010, her heart always belonged to Acton. She attended Acton Public School and later did her practice teaching there. She taught at Robert Little Public School and then McKenzie Smith Middle School. A woman of many talents, she turned her hand to sewing, knitting, crocheting, cake decorating and was known for her baking skills. People will remember Mom and Dad and their video cameras taping events throughout the area. Travel was a passion and she was very proud of her extensive work on the family tree which extends over 8 large binders. Over the years Mom was a member of many community groups and always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need.

The family will receive friends at MacKinnon Family Funeral Home, 55 Mill St. E., Acton on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at Trinity United Church, 70 Mill St. E., Acton at 11 a.m.
Cremation will follow.

If desired, memorial donations to Heritage Acton or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

Mom knew Ena since birth, they grew up together, went to teachers college together, bridesmaid at her wedding and shared family holidays together. She still talks of the days of them going to teachers college in Toronto and the book store where they purchased a dictionary with only " p to s " words and the fun they had. Our family remembers the visits on many occasions to Ena's home and the meals with multiple desserts that she would let us have more than one of.
Rest in peace dear friend.

My memories of Ena, and her family, go way back to the 60’s when I got to know her through Jim Jennings and our mutual friendship with the Ironside family. We’d visit Jim and Ena was really welcoming to us as she baked diabetic apple pies for him. Ena was teaching at Robert Little school when I was a student there. I remember her friendliness and warmth as she dealt with all of us. The years went by and I returned to teach at Robert Little in 1972. Ena was always available to assist beginning teachers and was a great role model. It was great to see her children Pat, Rick and Carolyn go through the grades and later see Pat’s boys as they attended Robert Little. Thank you, Ena, for the guidance you provided to many of us. I’ll never forget you.

Growing up in Acton, we were lucky to have incredible teachers, and Mrs. Gibson was right up there with the best of them. Firm, but lovingly consistent, and always willing to go the extra mile for her students, right up to the end of her career. My deepest condolences to your family. May you take comfort in the memories you have of her, and knowing how many lives she touched in a meaningful way.

Aunt Ena & Uncle Jim would get my wife & I to house sit while they were away on trips.
One year they went to Australia, a few days before their arrival home I had Pat bring me the sold sign off her home. Then put it up on the front lawn of 220 Mill St ( The Gibson resident )
Aunt Ena & Uncle Jim returned just a few days before school started in Sept, the rumor around town was they had to sell their home to pay for the trip down under. They got a kick out of the rumor but I was glad they had their great scene of humor. Another time I put signs up that the Gibson resort was under New Management. Mr & Mrs Gould were here from Australia & the four of them had gone east for a holiday. The look on the faces of them returning was priceless as the sign in the window red No Room at the Inn.
Aunt Ena & Uncle Jim never knew what to expect but found the humor in my pranks.
Good memories The best memories to have. Thank You Both for all you ever did for me.
Thank you Pat,Rick & Carolyn for letting me be part of a wonderful family.
And Yes our Christmas & Thanks Giving get together s will continue
We may have lose those we love but Jim 2020,Jackie 2019 & Ena 2020 will be with us
Love always Garry
