Our mother, Mary Oudesluys, was a close and dear friend of Shirley. A mutually tragic event brought them together 43 years ago and they enjoyed each others company for many years. Mom often spoke of Shirley and the other mothers with great admiration. Mom passed away a year ago and now Shirley and Mary can have a coffee together and celebrate their birthdays again. They will also be enjoying a wonderful reunion with their sons.

I worked with Shirley on several committees over the years. She had boundless energy to make our community a better place. She may have retired from nursing, but she always wanted people to be able to live their best lives by staying safe. Shirley often spoke of Lloyd, the love of her life, and her extended family. She always had a smile, and something good to say for everyone. Shirley was one of a kind, and we will miss her.

We were very sad to hear of Shirley's passing and send our sincerest condolences to Lloyd and all of the Broostad family. It was our great pleasure to know Shirley. She was an inspiration, always with a positive attitude and sense of humour. She worked tirelessly to help others and build the community. She was always engaging, had a clear mind, and loved a good conversation. She never dwelt on her health problems and never let aging stop her from doing what she wanted. When she moved into the seniors home where all the meals (including desserts) are taken care of, she told us one of her biggest problems was that she wasn't sure how she could bake! When she had her hip surgery, the thing that bothered her the most was not the surgery or the recovery, but the disappointment she had when people told her to slow down. What a lovely, lovely lady. We will miss her.
